There is no question that President Nicolas Sarkozy is a master political manipulator. On the domestic front he trumped both left and right, bringing Socialists into his cabinet, setting them at each others’ throats. At the same time, showing his true colors, he moved quickly to confront the unions and students over early retirement, probationary work guarantees, university places for all who want them. Note how his “reforms” are all about taking away rights, not giving people more. He also cleverly borrowed a soupçon of Le Pen’s anti-Arab jingoism for his broth.

In a recent debate between Marine Le Pen, vice president of the National Front of France and heir to her notorious father, and Tariq Ramadan, the Egyptian-Swiss intellectual, grandson of founder of the Muslim Brotherhood Hassan Al-Banna, dubbed the Muslim Martin Luther, both agreed that Sarkozy and his ilk pose the biggest threat to Europe’s social fabric. Le Pen grumbled that they steal arguments and votes from the NF; Ramadan complained that they make Le Pen’s ideas acceptable to the average voters.                 More...............

Here’s your question, class:

In his State of the Union, the President asked Congress for $300 million for poor kids in the inner city. As there are, officially, 15 million children in America living in poverty, how much is that per child? Correct! $20.

Here’s your second question. The President also demanded that Congress extend his tax cuts. The cost: $4.3 trillion over ten years. The big recipients are millionaires. And the number of millionaires happens, not coincidentally, to equal the number of poor kids, roughly 15 million of them. OK class: what is the cost of the tax cut per millionaire? That’s right, Richie, $287,000 apiece.

Mr. Bush said, “In neighborhoods across our country, there are boys and girls with dreams. And a decent education is their only hope of achieving them.”

So how much educational dreaming will $20 buy?                            More................

         نصيحة لوجه الله، بِمُجرَّد أن تُـنهي هذا المقال توجَّه لأقـرب مكتبةٍ وابتع أيَّ كتاب تجده لهذا الرجل، ولا مانع ـ إن استطعت ـ أن تبتاع كل كتبه ! ولن تندم، أعدك بذلك، قد تتفق مع الرجل، وقد تختلف، لكنني أعدك بأنك لن تندم، خاصة إذا كنت حياً !!  

     ومن أجل أن تدرك حجم خسارتك إن عصيتني وخالفت رغبتي، فاقرأ شيئاً مما كتب، لعلك تستدلُّ من الجزء على الكُـل، ولعلَّك تقول: كم خسرت، كيف لم أقرأ لرجل يقول مثل هذا الكلام؟، يقول جلال كشك :

    " .. والذين يتوقعون أن تحدث المعجزة.. فينتصرون بالمفاوضات، وقد هزموا في الحرب .. لن يروا المعجزة، بل سيصيبهم المسخ...لأنهم يعارضون القانون الإلهي، يعارضون قوانين الكون ، ويتجاهلون خبرات الشعوب ...

      إنسان الهزيمة لا يقوى إلا على صنع المزيد من الهزيمة مهما تمنى ومهما ادَّعى.

      إنسان الهزيمة يتحدث عن التغيير في كل شيء إلاّ في ذاته.. فلا يغير شيئاً على الإطلاق.

     أمَّة الهزيمة تفـتِّـش عن الخلاص في كل شيء إلا في ذاتها.. فتهوي من هزيمة إلى هزيمة ..

     إنسان الهزيمة، ما زال يبحث عن السلاح ويكدِّسه، تماماً كما كان الفأر يطلب جلد النَّمر.. حتى نفض الحكيم يديه منه، يائساً.. " ما جدوى أن أُلبسكَ جلد النَّمر.. وبين جَنبَـيْـك قلبُ فأر ؟! "

    إنها عبرة التاريخ كلِّه .. التغيير يبدأ في ذات الإنسان أولاً "( النَّكسةُ والغزو الفكري: 7، 8).

       ويقول ـ رحمه الله ـ في مكان آخر: " والخلاف حول تـفسير التاريخ ليس ظاهرة ترفٍ، ولا هو مجرد خلافٍ حولَ تفسير الماضي، بل هو في الدَّرجة الأولى خلافٌ حول الطَّريق إلى المستقبل.. والأمم دائماً تهرع إلى تاريخها، في لحظات مِحنتها تستمدُّ منه الإلهام والدَّعم النَّفسـي ، بينما يلجأ خصومها دائماً إلى تزييف التاريخ وتشـويهه لتضليل الحاضر وإفسـاد الطريق إلى المسـتقبل " ( ودخلت الخيل الأزهر : 16 ) .

     محمد جلال كشك عظيم من عظماء هذه الأمة، غـيَّـبَه الإعلامُ المُوجَّه، والصَّحافة المأجورة، أو الجاهلة التي تـتـبع كلَّ ناعق !

     جلال كشك أحد الذين تكلموا عن الأصنام زمن عُلوِّها؛  أيام كانت " تُـرْعَى وأمرُها مأتيُّ " .

     وهو الذي أخذ على عاتـقه كـشف واحد من هؤلاء ؛ " الحكواتي " ، صنم الصحافة الغبية ، وأحد أكذب من نطـق بالضاد ، وبلغة شكـسبير أيضاً ، مزور بـل مؤلف الـتاريخ ، صاحب الـتاريخ " البلاستيك " كما وصفه محمد جلال كشك ، أعني محمد حسنين هيكل ، الذي لا زال يستمع له المغفلون !

      محمد جلال كشك ، عندما تقرأ له تـتيقن أنه لم يُمسك بالقلم إلا بعد أن ألمَّ بالموضوع من أطرافه ، فهو لا يكـتب إلا عن اطِّلاعٍ واسعٍ . ثمَّ إنه ألزَم نفسه بألا يكتب شيئاً دون توثيق . فكل دعوى يسوقها تكون موثـقة عمن ادعاها عنه.

    محمد جلال كشك يكتب بِحُرقة، تـشعر بها وأنت تقرأ له، تكاد تحرقـك بوهجها، ولأنها لا تكفي وحدها مؤهلاً للكاتب الحقيقي، فإنه يكتب بحرفية وإتـقان لا تكاد تجدهما عند أغلب من يُسمَّى كاتباً !

      إنَّه مُنحاز حتى النخاع لأمته، لكنه ليس انحيازاً متعصِّباً ، بل انحيازٌ عن يقين ، وبحثٍ ودراسةٍ، فقد بدأ حياته شيوعياً، ولكن عقله وأُفُقَـهُ الواسع لم يقنع بها منهجاً ، فانطلق كما قال عنه أحد الصَّحفيين :" يبحث عن منقذ ؛ عن الفكر الذي يبني الأمة ، ويواجه بها تحديات العصر " . يعني أن الرَّجل لم يحمل مرغماً ما ولد عليه، بل إنَّ كلَّ ما كتبه يُعبِّر عن قناعةٍ لديه، لا يتـاجر ولا يداري، بل يكتب ما تُـوصله إليه أبحاثُـه. ومِن كُـتِبه تعرف أنَّ الرَّجل موسوعيٌّ يحترم قارئِهَ، لأنَّه يحترم نفسه.

   إنه من القلائل الذين أرجعوا الأزمة التي نعيشها إلى أسبابها الحقيقية، فهو لم يقف عند الظواهر، والنتائج، بل غاص في التاريخ باحثاً ومنقباً. ولا أظنُّ أنَّ كاتباً أو عالماً حلَّـل تاريخ حملة نابليون ، ونتـائجها على الأمَّة كما فعل محمد جلال كشك ، ولذلك فإنَّ كتابه الرائع : " ودخلت الخيل الأزهر " يصلح لأن يكون وثيقةً تأريخيةً تحليليةً لتـلكَ المرحلة ، لقد تـفوَّق محمد جلال كشك على نفسه في هذا الكتاب ، وإنِّي إذ أنصح بالدخول إلى عالم هذا الرجل ، أنصح بالبدءِ بهذا الكتـاب .

     إن الرجل ليس مجرد كاتب، بل هو بحق ودون مبالغة، شاهد على عصره، إيجابي التعامل والتفاعل معه. ولا أدري كيف يسوغ لمن يكتب أو يعمل في النَّهضة والإصلاحِ أن يفعل كل ذلك دون أن يقرأ هذا الرجل، نعم.. لا أن يقرأ ما يكتبه، بل يقرأه نفسه، لأنه صاحب همِّ، ورؤيةٍ، ومن كان كذلك فإنه يُقرأ هو وما كتبه.

      وُلد محمد جلال كشك سنة 1929، وتـوفيَّ سنة 1993 إثـر سكتـةٍ قـلبية، وهو يُناظر نصر حامد أبو زيد أحد المُعاقين المُستـغربين من طلائع الغَزو الفكريِّ. يناظره ليثبت له أن " التًّقدميَّة هي موقفٌ من حركة التَّاريخ " ، وليست شعارات و( كليشيهات ) جاهزة لذر الرماد في العيون ، وإسكات المعترضين . ولا عجب أن يسكت قلب هذا الكبير بعد هذه الرِّحلة الصَّعبة، وهذا الجهاد الطَّويل مع جيوش التّـَخريب والعمالة المُـندسِّيـن في قـلب هذه الأمَّة ! والسَّلام عليه ورحمة الله وبركاته .

John McCain's first wife won't say a harsh word about the man who dumped her. Is she a spineless wimp or a quiet hero?

March 6, 2000 | With a great deal of restraint and not a trace of opinion, the New York Times last week reported details of what writer Nicholas Kristof calls "an awkward time" in John McCain's life. The story, related in delightfully quaint language, managed to be fairly astonishing regardless of one's feelings about the Republican presidential candidate whose most familiar handle is that of "war hero."

It seems that McCain, who had once revealed to fellow prisoners of war in Vietnam that he wanted to be president, was restless in 1979. As Navy liaison to the Senate, he didn't have the career momentum he had counted on to propel him into an admiralty and on to the White House. He was 42, mired in stifling ordinariness. (Civilians call it "midlife crisis.")

But McCain was making bold career moves on the home front, hotly pursuing a 25-year-old blond from a wealthy Arizona family -- while married. Carol, his wife at the time, had once been quite a babe herself apparently, until a near-fatal car accident (while her husband was in Vietnam) left her 4 inches shorter, overweight and on crutches. The couple had three children, whom Carol cared for alone while her husband was in Vietnamese prisons.                More..........

Invaders or saviors? A scholar considers.

In his vivid and illuminating new book, "God's Crucible: Islam and the Making of Europe, 570-1215" (Norton, $29.95), historian David Levering Lewis re-examines the 400-year era of Muslim rule in Europe, a period during which a sophisticated and tolerant Islamic empire conquered - and profoundly influenced - parts of a West that had fallen into barbaric tribalism following the collapse of the Roman empire.

Lewis, a professor at New York University, received the Pulitzer Prize for both volumes of his two-part biography of W.E.B. Du Bois and is the author of eight other books, including "King: A Critical Biography" and "When Harlem Was in Vogue." The Profile of a Third World Country

It is difficult to know where Bush has accomplished the most destruction, the Iraqi economy or the US economy.

In the current issue of Manufacturing & Technology News, Washington economist Charles McMillion observes that seven years of Bush has seen the federal debt increase by two-thirds while US household debt doubled.

This massive Keynesian stimulus produced pitiful economic results. Median real income has declined. The labor force participation rate has declined. Job growth has been pathetic, with 28% of the new jobs being in the government sector. All the new private sector jobs are accounted for by private education and health care bureaucracies, bars and restaurants. Three and a quarter million manufacturing jobs and a half million supervisory jobs were lost. The number of manufacturing jobs has fallen to the level of 65 years ago.

This is the profile of a third world economy.

The "new economy" has been running a trade deficit in advanced technology products since 2002. The US trade deficit in manufactured goods dwarfs the US trade deficit in oil. The US does not earn enough to pay its import bill, and it doesn't save enough to finance the government's budget deficit.

To finance its deficits, America looks to the kindness of foreigners to continue to accept the outpouring of dollars and dollar-denominated debt.

The dollars are accepted, because the dollar is the world's reserve currency.

At the meeting of the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland, this week, billionaire currency trader George Soros warned that the dollar's reserve currency role was drawing to an end: "The current crisis is not only the bust that follows the housing boom, it's basically the end of a 60-year period of continuing credit expansion based on the dollar as the reserve currency. Now the rest of the world is increasingly unwilling to accumulate dollars."

If the world is unwilling to continue to accumulate dollars, the US will not be able to finance its trade deficit or its budget deficit. As both are seriously out of balance, the implication is for yet more decline in the dollar's exchange value and a sharp rise in prices.

Economists have romanticized globalism, taking delight in the myriad of foreign components in US brand name products. This is fine for a country whose trade is in balance or whose currency has the reserve currency role. It is a terrible dependency for a country such as the US that has been busy at work offshoring its economy while destroying the exchange value of its currency.

As the dollar sheds value and loses its privileged position as reserve currency, US living standards will take a serious knock.

If the US government cannot balance its budget by cutting its spending or by raising taxes, the day when it can no longer borrow will see the government paying its bills by printing money like a third world banana republic. Inflation and more exchange rate depreciation will be the order of the day.

Exonerating Neocon Criminals

According to FBI whistleblower Sibel Edmonds there is a vast black market for nukes, and certain U.S. officials have been supplying sensitive nuclear technology information to Turkish and Israeli interests through its conduits. It’s a scathing allegation which was first published by the London Times two weeks ago, and Edmonds’ charge seems to be on the verge of vindication.

In likely reaction to the London Times report, the Bush Administration quietly announced on January 22 that the president would like Congress to approve the sale of nuclear secrets to Turkey. As with most stories of this magnitude, the U.S. media has put on blinders, opting to not report either Edmonds’ story or Bush’s recent announcement.                                More.................

Peter Lu became interested in the subject on a trip to Central Asia

A study of medieval Islamic art has shown some of its geometric patterns use principles established centuries later by modern mathematicians.

Researchers in the US have found 15th Century examples that use the concept of quasicrystalline geometry.

This indicates intuitive understanding of complex mathematical formulae, even if the artisans had not worked out the underlying theory, the study says.

The discovery is published in the journal Science.

The research shows an important breakthrough had occurred in Islamic mathematics and design by 1200.

"It's absolutely stunning," Harvard's Peter Lu said in an interview.

"They made tilings that reflect mathematics that were so sophisticated that we didn't figure it out until the last 20 or 30 years."

The Islamic designs echo quasicrystalline geometry in that both use symmetrical polygonal shapes to create patterns that can be extended indefinitely without repetition.

Until now, the conventional view was that the complicated star-and-polygon patterns of Islamic design were conceived as zigzagging lines drafted using straightedge rulers and compasses.

"You can go through and see the evolution of increasing geometric sophistication. So they start out with simple patterns, and they get more complex," Mr Lu added.

He became interested in the subject while travelling in Uzbekistan, where he noticed a 16th Century Islamic building with decagonal motif tiling.

Mr Lu, who designs physics experiments for the International Space Station, was in the region to deliver a lecture in Turkmenistan. Islamic art traditionally uses a mixture of calligraphy, geometric and floral designs because of a prohibition on the portrayal of the human form.

A Secret History

For Muslims and non-Muslims alike, the stock image of an Islamic scholar is a gray-bearded man. Women tend to be seen as the subjects of Islamic law rather than its shapers. And while some opportunities for religious education do exist for women — the prestigious Al-Azhar University in Cairo has a women’s college, for example, and there are girls’ madrasas and female study groups in mosques and private homes — cultural barriers prevent most women in the Islamic world from pursuing such studies. Recent findings by a scholar at the Oxford Center for Islamic Studies in Britain, however, may help lower those barriers and challenge prevalent notions of women’s roles within Islamic society. Mohammad Akram Nadwi, a 43-year-old Sunni alim, or religious scholar, has rediscovered a long-lost tradition of Muslim women teaching the Koran, transmitting hadith (deeds and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad) and even making Islamic law as jurists.

Akram embarked eight years ago on a single-volume biographical dictionary of female hadith scholars, a project that took him trawling through biographical dictionaries, classical texts, madrasa chronicles and letters for relevant citations. “I thought I’d find maybe 20 or 30 women,” he says. To date, he has found 8,000 of them, dating back 1,400 years, and his dictionary now fills 40 volumes. It’s so long that his usual publishers, in Damascus and Beirut, have balked at the project, though an English translation of his preface — itself almost 400 pages long — will come out in England this summer. (Akram has talked with Prince Turki al-Faisal, Saudi Arabia’s former ambassador to the United States, about the possibility of publishing the entire work through his Riyadh-based foundation.)                     More..............

It is not surprising that, following the Sharm El-Sheikh summit on Feb. 8, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas used almost the same language to announce a cessation of hostilities between the two peoples. Reading from a prewritten script, they both stated that the Palestinians would stop all acts of violence against Israelis, while Israel would cease all military activity against Palestinians. The director of the show was not Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, the host of the event, but newly appointed U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. To be sure, neither Rice nor any other American was present at the summit, but the Bush administration's spirit was ubiquitous.

Many reporters and analysts applauded the meeting, claiming that it will pave the way for a resumption of dialogue and cooperation. They seemed to suggest that Israelis and Palestinians are on the doorstep of a new era. All of this begs the question: Will the Bush administration manage to stop the seemingly endless cycle of violence and rekindle the so-called Israeli-Palestinian peace process?

The answer is a resounding yes ­ on the condition, of course, that one believes in magic.                       More...................

Instruments of doom

No other development has done so much to make the Middle East unstable than Israel's decision to become a major nuclear power, with a wide arsenal of advanced nuclear weapons. Unlike other nations that have considered nuclear weapons for deterrence purpose only and were satisfied with the production of a limited number of atomic weapons, Israel has continued to produce a suite of weapons that can be used to do everything from blunt an armoured attack to annihilate a national capital city.

Israel's pursuit of nuclear capability hasn't been a solo effort. Other countries like France were very involved in making Israel the nuclear power it is today. But, while these countries have provided official, if covert, assistance, Israel has also been involved in the aggressive acquisition of nuclear secrets through espionage, even from its largest sponsor, the United States. There, the large community of Jewish nuclear scientists and the lax security has allowed Israel to pursue a nuclear weapons programme without even paying the economic costs usually associated with such endeavour.                                    More.....................

... ومرة ثانية لن نكتب سياسة! وفسروها على مزاجكم؛ لعدم الجدوى؟ قد! لكثرة المهازل؟ ممكن! أم لأن الحديث ذو شجون وسيتشعب بنا إلى مناطق لا نريد الذهاب إليها الآن؟ إذ كل حديث يقتصر على اليهود أعده ـ وسامحوني ـ عبثاً من العبث. وكل مقال لا يتحدث عن الأسباب والأخطاء، فهزل من الهزل.

وإذن لنتحدث عن جميلات فلسطين، عن جميلات غزة، لنتحدث عن جميلة الشطي مرة أخرى. لماذا؟ للتاريخ، وكما قلت سابقاً عنهن: "كي أسجل عظمة هاتيك النسوة، فلا ينبغي أن نمل من تكرار ذكرهن، ألسن يصنعن أيام الله؟، وحتى تحفر أسماؤهن في القلوب، وعلى الهواء الذي نتنفسه! وما كتابة التاريخ في إحدى صورها، وبعض أهدافها، إلا نقل للواقع المادي، إلى عالم المعاني بلغة كاتبها، لتُصيب شعور قارئها، فتتحول إلى واقع آخر تصنعه النفس كما تحب أن يكون. وهل كتب الناسُ التاريخ إلا لتخليد من صنعوه؟!".

وتُراني لو جئتُ لمقال سابق عنهن "التاريخ تكتبه النساء"، وغيرتُ بعض العبارات، وحذفتُ بعض الأسماء، وأضفتُ بعض المعطيات، أتراني ـ بعد ذلك ـ بحاجة لصياغةٍ جديدة؟! الجواب لا بالتأكيد! لن أكون بحاجة لكتابة شيءٍ جديد، وهل من جديد؟ بلى هناك جديد، فلا بد من إضافة:

المشهد السابق كانت هناك مظاهرة، وكان الخصم هم اليهود. اليوم هناك اعتصام، ومحاولة للعبور من معبر رفح، والخصم هم نحن! "والإصبع اللي داس على الزناد عربي"! ولا تعليق، فكما قلنا نحن نكتب كي تعرف الأجيال القادمة، أنه كان هناك حياة وسط هذا الموت. نكتب كي لا (تبصق) علينا الأجيالُ القادمة بالفم المليان!!

لكن قفوا لحظة، فلن نستطيع مغادرة المشهد قبل أن نرى في الخلفية مشهداً لا علاقة له بالحصار! لكنَّه منذ الحصار خرج من ثنايا الذاكرة، وطفا على السطح، وقد رأته الجميلات، فلن نستطيع تجاوزه! إنه مشهد تشترك فيه أطراف كثيرة منهم من ظهر في الصورة ومنهم من لم يظهر!

فبينما الجميلاتُ يقفن عند معبر رفح، فإذا الراقصون بالسيف (على جراحنا) يظهرون على المسرح جنباً إلى جنب مع الجميلات! والجميلات يتساءلن: مع كل هذا الوُدِّ، ألا تستطيعون إدخال شيءٍ من النفط إلينا؟! ألا تتوسطون لنا؟! ولم كلُّ هذا الوُد مع جزارنا؟! إننا نُذبح بمنع نفطنا عنا!!

وفي المشهد مجموعةٌ من المُطوعة (المشايخ) ينظرون إلى الراقصين (على جراحنا)، بكل راحة ضمير، وهدوء بال، فقريباً أنهوا فريضة الحج، وغُفر لهم ما تقدم من ذنوبهم وما تأخر! ولقد كانت عمارة المسجد الحرام، وسقاية الحاج على أكمل وجه! وها هم الراقصون (على جراحنا) يلبسون على الشرع، ويتختمون بالبنصر كما هي السُّـنَّة، فناموا مطمئنين فالإسلام بخير، وكما قال أحدُهم يوماً: "ليس حال دولة بني أمية، ودولة بني العباس بأفضل حالاً"!

أما الجميلات، فنقول لهنَّ ما قـلناه سابقاً: "إن الذين صاغوا الأمثال التي تتحدث عن المرأة التي تهزُّ السرير بيمينها، وعن التي تدفع أبناءها إلى القتال بكل شجاعة، وعن التي ترضع أولادها حليب البطولة، على هؤلاء أن يراجعوا تجاربهم وعقولهم فذلك تاريخ انتهى، وهنا في فلسطين نقضت المرأة الفلسطينية المسلمة كل أمثالهم فهي لم تعد تكتفي بالسرير لتهزَّه، إنها تهز العالم وتقلبه رأساً على عقب! وهي لم تعد تكتفي بإرضاع لبن البطولة، إنها البطولة نفسها، إنها العِزَّة من أطرافها.

وإنَّ المرأةَ الفلسطينيةَ لم تعُد تصرخُ: وا ... لأنَّها أدركت أنَّ صرختَها ستضيعُ أدراجَ الرِّياحِ، فما ثَـمَّ معتصمٌ! وأنَّ عليها هي النداءُ، وأنَّ عليها هي الجوابُ. فالسَّلامُ عليها حيَّةً وشهيدةً حيَّةً. والسَّلامُ عليها حين وُلِدت وَوَلدت، وحين أنجبَت وأرضعَت، وحين دَفعت حبَّةَ القلبِ إلى ساحاتِ الجهاد، وحين لَحِـقـت به مُتعجِّلةً لقاءَ ربِّها لِيَرضى ... السَّلامُ عليها .. السَّلام عليها.
