Media Pundits Back Away From 9/11 Debate With SheenInitial interest waned after Sheen insisted discussion must be moderated fairly
Paul Joseph Watson Charlie Sheen’s challenge to media pundits to debate him on the issues brought up in his “20 Minutes With The President” letter has not been met after several news outlets expressed interest in taking part but later backed off when it became clear that the discussion would have to be fairly moderated. Bill O’Reilly was the only pundit to express an interest in debating Sheen but all has gone quiet on that front following Sheen’s request that the debate be properly presented with each side having equal time. Earlier this month, appearing on The Alex Jones Show, Sheen responded to personal attacks by Meghan McCain, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly, by challenging them all to a debate on neutral ground regarding the unanswered questions surrounding 9/11. Initially, CNN’s Larry King Live show was eager to host the debate but was shocked that it could find no one who would agree to go toe to toe with Sheen and his 20 bullet points on 9/11. E mails forwarded to us by Sheen indicate that Bill O’Reilly was initially interested and that ABC’s Good Morning America was keen to broadcast the debate. However, as soon as Sheen outlined rules that would ensure a fair environment to discuss the issues, O’Reilly and his representatives went cold and backed away from the challenge, according to Sheen. (ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW) But at least O’Reilly had the courage to respond, unlike every other debunker who attacked Sheen yet skulked away in a cowardly fashion when they were challenged. “We’re not naked shouting from the top of a building ‘come debate us’, we’re just issuing a very calm and reasonable offer to just sit down in an open and fair debate forum and hash this thing out,” Sheen told The Alex Jones Show yesterday. Sheen characterized O’Reilly’s brief interest in the debate as a “nibble” and added that an agreement has not been reached on the terms that were presented to the Fox News host’s representatives. Sheen said that the reaction to his challenge was, “Inkeeping with how this very deceptive and dangerous machine operates.” “As long as they’ve got the media under their control then this is the mountain that we must continue to climb,” he added. Watch Sheen’s appearance on The Alex Jones Show yesterday below. E mails exchanged between Sheen, his representative, and Bill O’Reilly’s representative are reprinted at the end.

Stan Video: Palestinian children ride obstacle course to schoolAlJazeeraEnglishSeptember 30, 2009 Unco-operative donkeys and checkpoints manned by armed soldiers are not obstacles most students have to face on their way to school. But for some Palestinian bedouin children living in the occupied West Bank, they are everyday challenges on their journey to get an education, as Al Jazeera's Clayton Swisher finds in the town of Tubas. The Single-Payer Alternativeby Ashley Smith / September 30th, 2009 The politicians declared one plan for health care reform “off the table” from the beginning: a single-payer system that would cover all Americans and cut out private insurance. But as Dr. Andy Coates explains, it remains the only alternative that can solve the crisis of the health care non-system. Coates is a member of Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP), co-chair of Single Payer New York and a steward in the Public Employees Federation in New York. Ashley Smith: The right wing has mounted a major offensive against Democrats proposals for health care reform, with all sorts of absurd allegations and distortions. What’s your assessment of the right-wing attacks? Dr. Andy Coates: At one town hall I attended, a guy had a sign that said, incredibly, “Tsars are not for the USA, Tsars are for the USSR.” Nearby, there was quiet bragging that somebody had a gun in his car. So there is nuttiness, but also potential danger as the right wing mobilizes. At that meeting, I thought that people for single-payer outnumbered the right wing. Those in favor of some kind of reform far outnumber those against, but the “get the government out of health care” group fought for the mike and fought for attention. Earlier, I was heckled while speaking in favor of single-payer on a
panel in Syracuse convened by a Congressman. The interesting thing to
me–besides hearing people holler “socialism!” at the top of their
lungs–was that the hecklers listened carefully to every word people
said. And I noted their applause when I said that mandating the
purchase of health insurance wouldn’t solve anything. At that meeting,
a clear majority was for single-payer, but that’s not how the press
reported it. More............................. Settlers chop down Nablus olive grove on eve of harvestPublished Monday 28/09/2009 (updated) 29/09/2009 14:52

– Ma’an – Dozens of chainsaw-wielding Israeli settlers cut down more
than 150 olive trees in to the northern West Bank village of Burin,
south of Nablus on Monday. The assault came a few days before Palestinian farmers throughout the country begin harvesting their olives. According to Ghassan Daghlas, the Palestinian official in charge of monitoring settlement activity in the northern West Bank, dozens of Israelis from the settlement Yitzhar raided fields in the area of Khallat Siwar between the villages of Huwwara and Burin and cut down more than 150 olive trees using chainsaws. Daghlas labeled the settlers’ attack as “criminal act” calling on human right groups to take action to stop Israeli settlers’ assaults against the Palestinians and their property. The Orange County Register
Jose Campoverde, 45, of Anaheim is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail on suspicion of lewd conduct with a minor, sexual battery, child annoyance and false imprisonment, according to county jail records. Campoverde is the pastor of Ministerio Cristo Vive, a small congregation whose members worship in a few suites behind the 99 Cents Only store on South Euclid, police said. On Sept. 11, a 17-year-old member of Campoverde's church told Anaheim police that her pastor had fondled her while driving her home in May, said Sgt. Rick Martinez of the Anaheim Police Department. According to the girl, police said, she had been waiting at an Anaheim bus stop when Campoverde pulled up and told her he was there to drive her home. Campoverde told the girl her mother had given the OK, police said. She got in the car, Martinez said. On the drive back to the girl's home, Campoverde fondled the girl and tried to kiss her, Martinez said. During a two-week police investigation, three other girls said they were also molested by Campoverde, Martinez said. The youngest was 13; the oldest was 17. Some of the abuse that the girls alleged occurred at the church-owned halfway houses in Garden Grove and Anaheim, Martinez said. Campoverde was arrested Sept. 23. Campoverde has worked as a pastor in Orange County for at least the past eight years, Martinez said. Detectives are also looking into his past as a pastor in Los Angeles, he said. Anyone with information regarding Campoverde is asked to call Anaheim police Det. Omar Adham at 714-765-1623.
The Real Reasons Behind Fed SecrecyBy Ron Paul
Last week I was very pleased that the Financial Services Committee held a hearing on the Federal Reserve Transparency Act, HR 1207. The bill has 295 cosponsors and there is also strong support for the companion bill in the Senate. This hearing was a major step forward in getting the bill passed. I was pleased that the hearing was well-attended, especially considering that it was held on a Friday at nine o’clock in the morning! I have been talking about the immense, unchecked power of the Federal Reserve for many years, while the attention of Congress was always on other things. It was gratifying to see my colleagues asking probing questions and demonstrating genuine concern about this important issue as well. The witness testifying in favor of HR 1207 made some very strong points, which was no surprise considering the bill is simply common sense. It was also no surprise that the witness testifying against the bill had no good arguments as to why a full audit should not be conducted promptly. He attempted to make the case that the fed is already sufficiently accountable to Congress and that the current auditing policy is adequate. The fact is that the Fed comes to Congress and talks about only what it wants to talk about, and the GAO audits only what the current laws allow to be audited. The really important things however, are off limits. There are no convincing arguments that it is in the best interests of the American people for anything the Fed does to be off limits. It has been argued that full disclosure of details of funding facilities like TALF and PDCF that enabled massive bailouts of Wall Street would damage the financial position of those firms and destabilize the economy. In other words, if the American people knew how rotten the books were at those banks and how terribly they messed up, they would never willingly invest in them, and they would fail. Failure is not an option for friends of the Fed. Therefore, the funds must be stolen from the people in the dark of night. This is not how a free country works. This is not how free markets work. That is crony corporatism and instead of being a force for economic stabilization, it totally undermines it. If the Fed gave its actual arguments against a full audit, they would not have mentioned anything about political independence or economic stability. Instead they would admit they don’t want to be audited because they enjoy their current situation too much. Under the guise of currency control, they are able to help out powerful allies on Wall Street, in exchange for lucrative jobs or who-knows-what favors later on. An audit would expose the Fed as a massive fraud perpetrated on this country, enriching a privileged few bankers at the top of our economic food chain, and leaving the rest of us with massively devalued dollars which we are forced to use by law. An audit would make people realize that, while Bernie Madoff defrauded a lot of investors for a lot of money, the Fed has defrauded every one of us by destroying the value of our money. An honest and full accounting of how the money system really works in this country would mean there is not much of a chance the American people would stand for it anymore. The Vatican has lashed out at criticism over its handling of its paedophilia crisis by saying the Catholic church was "busy cleaning its own house" and that the problems with clerical sex abuse in other churches were as big, if not bigger. In a defiant and provocative statement, issued following a meeting of the UN human rights council in Geneva, the Holy See said the majority of Catholic clergy who committed such acts were not paedophiles but homosexuals attracted to sex with adolescent males. The statement, read out by Archbishop Silvano Tomasi, the Vatican's permanent observer to the UN, defended its record by claiming that "available research" showed that only 1.5%-5% of Catholic clergy were involved in child sex abuse. He also quoted statistics from the Christian Scientist Monitor newspaper to show that most US churches being hit by child sex abuse allegations were Protestant and that sexual abuse within Jewish communities was common. He added that sexual abuse was far more likely to be committed by family members, babysitters, friends, relatives or neighbours, and male children were quite often guilty of sexual molestation of other children. The statement said that rather than paedophilia, it would "be more correct" to speak of ephebophilia, a homosexual attraction to adolescent males. "Of all priests involved in the abuses, 80 to 90% belong to this sexual orientation minority which is sexually engaged with adolescent boys between the ages of 11 and 17." The statement concluded: "As the Catholic church has been busy cleaning its own house, it would be good if other institutions and authorities, where the major part of abuses are reported, could do the same and inform the media about it." The Holy See launched its counter–attack after an international representative of the International Humanist and Ethical Union, Keith Porteous Wood, accused it of covering up child abuse and being in breach of several articles under the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Porteous Wood said the Holy See had not contradicted any of his accusations. "The many thousands of victims of abuse deserve the international community to hold the Vatican to account, something it has been unwilling to do, so far. Both states and children's organisations must unite to pressurise the Vatican to open its files, change its procedures worldwide, and report suspected abusers to civil authorities." Representatives from other religions were dismayed by the Holy See's attempts to distance itself from controversy by pointing the finger at other faiths. Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, head of the New York Board of Rabbis, said: "Comparative tragedy is a dangerous path on which to travel. All of us need to look within our own communities. Child abuse is sinful and shameful and we must expel them immediately from our midst." A spokesman for the US Episcopal Church said measures for the prevention of sexual misconduct and the safeguarding of children had been in place for years. Of all the world religions, Roman Catholicism has been hardest hit by sex abuse scandals. In the US, churches have paid more than $2bn (£1.25bn) in compensation to victims. In Ireland, reports into clerical sexual abuse have rocked both the Catholic hierarchy and the state. The Ryan Report, published last May, revealed that beatings and humiliation by nuns and priests were common at institutions that held up to 30,000 children. A nine-year investigation found that Catholic priests and nuns for decades terrorised thousands of boys and girls, while government inspectors failed to stop the abuse. The Pathology of EvilPM Netanyahu’s UN Speech by Gilad Atzmon / September 29th, 2009 Israeli PM Netanyahu’s speech at the UN is a major insight into the Israeli’s mentality, psyche and logic. In his speech Netanyahu, a prolific and charismatic speaker, gives air to his genocidal inclinations, he brings to light the Israeli supremacy but he also allows us to detect some shaky and vulnerable spots at the heart of the Jewish national narrative. Reading Netanyahu’s speech makes it very clear that both the Zionist Shoa and the ‘promised land’ narratives are on the verge of collapse. It seems as if the ‘discredited’ Iranian president Ahmadinejad has managed to succeed after all. Don’t You Mess With Our Shoa Israelis love their Shoa, for the Shoa is no doubt their best selling Hasbara (propaganda) product. It somehow allows them to kill en masse and to do it indistinguishably while insisting that it is they who happen to be the victims. “I went to a villa in a suburb of Berlin called Wannsee.” Said Netanyahu. “There, on January 20,1942, after a hearty meal, senior Nazi officials met and decided how to exterminate the Jewish people.” PM Netanyahu, if you are genuinely interested in ‘extermination plans’ you do not have to travel to Wannsee, Berlin. All you have to do is visit your IDF’s headquarters in Tel Aviv. Your chief commanders will guide you through their IDF ‘solutions’ for the Palestinians. At the end of the day, it is your army that surrounds Palestinians with barbed-wire, it is you who keep civilian populations in a siege with inadequate food supplies and medicine. It is your army that poured WMD over the most densely populated neighbourhoods on this planet. While the real meaning of the ‘Nazi Final Solution’ (Die Endlösung) is still discussed by historians who fail to agree between themselves what it really meant, the true reality of the Israeli murderous solution has been seen by us all. Torture in Bagram and Guantánamo: The Declaration of Ahmed al-Darbi29.9.09
Declaration of Ahmed Al Darbi, July 1, 2009Pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 1746, I certify that the following is true and correct to the best of my knowledge: INTRODUCTION 1. My name is Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed Al Darbi. 2. I am a Saudi national who has been imprisoned at the U.S. Naval Station at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba (“Guantánamo”) for nearly six years. The U.S. military has assigned me Internment Serial Number (“ISN”) 768 at Guantánamo. 3. In June 2002, I traveled by air from Dubai, United Arab Emirates to Baku, Azerbaijan. While I was at customs in the Baku airport, waiting to be processed for entry, I was taken into custody by local Azerbaijani authorities. I did not know why Azerbaijani authorities apprehended me and I had no reason to know that they would. I was held in Azerbaijani custody for about two months. 4. In August 2002, the Azerbaijani authorities turned me over to U.S. agents. These agents [REDACTED]. They then blindfolded me, wrapped their arms around my neck in a way that strangled me, and cursed at me. [REDACTED], and somebody else kept saying, “fuck you” in my ear. I was terrified and feared for my life, because I did not know who had seized me, which government’s custody I was in, or where they were taking me. They did not tell me where we were going. 5. I was eventually taken to a place that I now know was Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan (“Bagram”). I was imprisoned at Bagram for about eight months. At Bagram, my detainee number was 264. 6. In late March 2003, I was transferred to Guantánamo. More.................................... The Case of the Missing Torture Documents Did ten classified Bush-era documents vanish from a super-secure government facility?—By Nick Baumann
Classified Bush-era documents on the administration's controversial interrogation and rendition programs are missing, according to a recent court filing submitted by the Obama Justice Department. But a Justice Department spokeswoman says the documents may not actually be gone; they may never have existed—even though Bush administration records say that they do. Welcome to the Case of the Disappearing Torture Documents. This is more than just a bureaucratic whodunit. There's a possibility that government officials purposely destroyed records pertaining to detainee abuse. Here's what happened: In 2007, the Bush administration was fighting a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which was seeking records related to the deaths of detainees, their treatment, and the administration's rendition policies. CIA lawyers drew up a list [PDF] of 181 documents that they considered exempt from release. Some of these records, which were stored in a secure facility, were so sensitive that Justice Department lawyers lacked the clearances to handle them. After President Obama took office, he issued a new FOIA policy, instructing executive branch agencies to "adopt a presumption in favor" of releasing information. The Obama Justice Department reprocessed the ACLU's earlier request under the new guidelines. But when they did so, department officials discovered that 10 documents listed on the index compiled by the Bush administration were nowhere to be found. The Justice Department noted this in a filing [PDF] by David Barron, an acting assistant attorney general, which was submitted last week as part of the ongoing ACLU case and first highlighted by Firedoglake blogger Marcy Wheeler. Barron acknowledged in the filing that even more documents could be missing, because "many" of the documents the Obama team did find were "not certain matches" to the ones on the Bush administration's list. "It was impossible to ascertain whether the discrepancy was the result of an error by the prior administration when it created the original…index or whether the prior administration misplaced the documents in question," Tracy Schmaler, a Justice Department spokeswoman, told Mother Jones. In other words, CIA and Justice Department lawyers might have mistakenly listed documents that never existed in the first place. But is it plausible that the inconsistency could be merely a clerical error? After the Bush administration created the index, a CIA official swore under oath that she had reviewed the documents on the original list. And one of the disputed documents was listed on the original index as a 46-page memo "providing legal advice," classified as top secret and dated 25 July 2002. Schmaler says the Obama administration's search never found a document matching that description. Could the CIA and Justice Department lawyers who composed the original list have mistakenly included a non-existent memo—complete with a date and precise page count? According to Barron's filing, the documents on the original list were stored in a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility, or SCIF, a specially secured room that is protected not only against unauthorized entry but also against electronic surveillance or monitoring by foreign intelligence services. If documents went missing from a SCIF, says Steven Aftergood, a government secrecy expert at the Federation of American Scientists, that raises serious questions about the government's ability to keep sensitive documents secure. "If there is any indication of sloppiness in security procedures at one of these facilities, that's worrisome all by itself," he says. "It suggests that some of the nation's most sensitive information is not being properly protected." Aftergood says he expects the court will try to determine if the discrepancies between the two indexes are due to an error or whether the documents actually disappeared. "The government will have to do better than shrug its shoulders and say 'I don't know' if they want to persuade the court that this was not an act of bad faith," he says. Alexander Abdo, a lawyer working on the case for the ACLU, says, "We'll potentially never know what was in those documents." The Decapitation of Pakistan by its own Military!By Zahir Ebrahim ![]() Who really killed Benazir Bhutto? I mean the prime-movers? Well let's read it in her own lucid words, which have now been augmented, almost two years later, with the Pakistan's Army Chief of Staff's belated disclosures of September 21, 2009. Why belated? Well, please see these unpublished letters to many Pakistani newspaper editors on their repeatedly perpetuating the fiction of Who Killed Benazir Bhutto in cahoots with the 'hectoring hegemons' and their agents! The American agenda for Pakistan is not a state-secret. Rather, it is only thinly disguised as perpetually fighting the “insurgents” in a lifetime of war, the World War IV. Whereas, in reality, both the “insurgency”, and the “counter-insurgency”, are entirely designed and fabricated in the USA as part of the evolving tactics of Hegelian Dialectics. They are enacted on the ground by various two-bit errand boys and expert trigger pullers. The already well-known existence of black-ops assassination squads in Pakistan/Afghanistan, known to the local peoples for years as the real prime-movers behind the heinous local terrorist acts, belatedly confirmed by NYT,WP, and NYT, in August 2009. See these two December 2008 reports on the Mumbai terrorist Act as reportedly orchestrated by Ali Baba from his perch in the Hindu Kush. The arrival of the black-ops in the region is not recent, albeit the public disclosures might be. Starting in the immediate aftermath of 911, and perhaps even earlier, Pakistan may well have become the largest deployment region for the CIA in modern times, both covert (unknown to Pakistani government and working to destabilize Pakistan), and overt (with Pakistani military's blessings ostensibly fighting the “insurgents”, Bin Laden, Al-Qaaeda). And since Jundallah got launched to destabilize Iran, Baluchistan along with the Pak-Afghan regions have been awash with black-ops, and obviously of course, also with officially recognized US soldiers manning American military bases on Pakistani soil. But these soldiers of freedom were rarely spotted in the streets of major cities before. The following video report therefore portends of ominous whirlwinds engulfing Pakistan: The events today are so transparent that many a retired con-fession artist are getting in on the act to claim the flag of patriotism. Going for hajj after having eaten 900 mice is the favorite pastime of Pakistani praetorian guards. I am only waiting for any sitting Pakistani General to rise to that occasion, if it's not already too late! But I am afraid it probably is – see here, here, here, and here. The decapitation of Pakistan by Pakistan's finest. The shameful and criminal dislocation of up to 2.4 million civilians in May of this year was rightly described as “anexodus that is beyond biblical”. Just as from the USSR's point of view in yesteryears, the “insurgency” against them in Afghanistan was foreign inculcated, entirely fabricated in the USA (as we know today but held as a closely guarded secret then), which thusly forced the Soviets to apply counter-insurgency measures, and subsequently, an outright invasion of Afghanistan (read Brzezinski's own statements in Saving Pakistan cited below, and watch Brzezinski speak in the video clip below devilishly crafting the “insurgency” for the Russians on the Pak-Afghan border), the so called “insurgency” in Pakistan is also similarly fabricated in the USA through covert intervention and black-ops. The Pakistan military, not too well-versed in political science or Hegelian Dialectics based Machiavellian state-craft (I presume), is similarly being compelled to take real counter-insurgency measures like the Soviets. Aided and abetted of course by high ranking traitors from within their own ranks, and by their foreign paymasters' militaries (NATO, Blackwater now renamed Xe, and other un-named foreign divisions operating within Pakistan which I call “Jundallah-plusplus” to distinguish them from “Jundallah” which is apparently targeting Iran from Pakistani soil). The simple fact that Pakistan is supplying all the drinking water (bottled by Nestle), and full logistics channel for war-making supplies to NATO in Afghanistan is telling in and of itself. Pakistan is equally responsible for destroying the Afghan society, the Afghan people, and there is no less spilled-blood of innocent Afghani Muslims upon Pakistan's hands over the past 30 years, than upon the United States'. Pakistani military helped destroy Afghanistan, and they are now
helping to destroy Pakistan. No Pakistani civilian I know, including
myself, ever authorized the Pakistani military to destroy Afghanistan,
or aid the United States in its own hegemonic plans on the Grand
Chessboard. Do you know anyone? So from where did they get their
mandate? I would rather have clean drinking water in my tap, damn it!
What good are the bloody nukes when they become the raison d'être for
our very destruction in this manner without ever firing a single
missile at the drones that are killing our own peoples?

What I personally got from reading this book was how articulate Timothy McVeigh was in expressing his opinion and forming an argument - Vidal shared many of their dispatches. This was surprising to me since Western Mainstream Media (AKA the government ) portrayed McVeigh as an illiterate lunatic. Gore Vidal proved otherwise. But this post is not about Timothy McVeigh or Gore Vidal, it’s about truth and the consequences of American apathy. Yesterday, on September 27, the FBI released long-secret security tapes showing the chaos immediately after the 1995 bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building. Unfortunately, however, the tapes are “blank in the minutes before the blast and appear to have been edited”
Raw Video: New Look at Oklahoma City BombingThere are many unanswered questions regarding this event, which is why, in 2007, former deputy assistant director Danny Coulson called for a new investigation.
The Oklahoma City bombing was the pretence that the US government needed to introduce the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996. A law that “had a tremendous impact on the law of habeas corpus in the United States.” It was a harbinger of what was to come with the Patriot Act, which was introduced after 911 and signed into law by George W. Bush on 26 October 2001. This law, in essence, rendered the US Constitution as nothing more than toilet paper. "The Constitution is just a piece of paper" - G.W. BushI find it incredible that 14 years after the Oklahoma City bombing the FBI has the gull to release blacked out videos from the incident. I wonder how long it will take the FBI, or the CIA, or whatever organization is in charge of suppressing information about 911, to release all the tapes from the attack on the Pentagon - all 85 of them, not just a blurry short. September 28 Former Rep. Jim Traficant tells Greta Van Susteren he is still "the same jackass"By Sabrina EatonSeptember 10, 2009, 2:26PMCourtesy of FOX News Channel's "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren"FOX News Channel's "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren" will air an interview tonight with former Democratic Rep. James A. Traficant of Poland. "I don't know yet...if I do run, get your best hold, because I will be running downhill with my tails flapping in the wing wide open," the Youngstown-area political fixture told Van Susteren. "But I have some grudges, and I want to go at them...they came to me and said if I said I was guilty, I might even get a pardon. And I told them to shove the pardon up their derriere sideways." Seven years behind bars on corruption charges clearly hasn't diminished Traficant's rhetorical chops. FOX News Channel's press release on the show is packed with so many fresh Traficant-isms, we don't want to deny our readers a single one. So here they are: ON LIFE IN PRISON: "The first place I went was Allenwood, and I think the reason I went there is there were a lot of illegal immigrants there. And they knew I had the troops on the border...I think I was put in a position to be hurt." "Then I went to a place called Ray Brook up in upstate New York, known as "The Gladiator School. There's a lot of violence. Well, it was a medium high...most political figures go to some camps in country clubs. I didn't." "I mean, I was a prisoner, but I understood the dynamics of prison life. And now what you have is, they want to keep the prisons open, keep the jobs going. They're putting 20, 30 years on some of these young people, and it's out of hand." ON HIS FUTURE: "And if it offends some people, then so be it. You see, because I'm still, I guess, the same jackass I was." "Now, people laughed when I called for the depression. Stevie Wonder could see this coming. Stevie Wonder could see America's troubles now." ON WHETHER HE IS AN ANTI-SEMITE: "I believe that Israel has a powerful stranglehold on the American government. They control both members of the House, the House and the Senate. They have us involved in wars in which we have little or no interest." .September 27 Breaking the Silence South of Hebronby Jeff Gore / September 26th, 2009 A few days ago some friends and I took a tour of the hills south of the city of Hebron in the West Bank. The tour was given by Breaking the Silence, a group of former Israeli soldiers who speak about the conscienceless things that they did to Palestinians in the name of “security” during their time in the military. I suspect that many of them view this project as some sort of repentance for their sins, and I also suspect that to some of them, it will never be enough. As our bus plowed southward from Jerusalem, the scenery was of secondary importance. What held my interest were the anecdotes of our two ex-soldier tour guides, who shared priceless insights into a military occupation that I had only heard about from the Palestinian side. The former soldiers were interesting specimens, one resembling a Brooklyn hipster, the other a dreadlocked hippie. Before I go any further, I should mention that the military is one
of Israel’s most revered institutions. If you are an Israeli citizen,
military service is compulsory: three years for a man, two for a woman.
Refuseniks are pretty rare in Israel. I knew an Israeli girl back in
college that boasted that not one of her dozen or so cousins had less
than a fantastic, life-changing time in the army. It’s easy to imagine
why: the camaraderie forged in the classless ranks, the heft of a
weapon at the ready, the sense of importance reinforced by friends and
family (“Don’t worry about it soldier, it’s on me.”), and most of all,
the very little actual danger that they face. The Israeli Defense
Forces, wielding such disproportionate power in relation to the
Palestinians, is rarely on defense. Thus they can have their cake and
